Despite the recent emergence of 4D theaters, production of 4D effects relies on manual authoring and thus remains laborious. I developed algorithms that synthesize three classes of motion effects from the audiovisual content of a film. I assessed the subjective quality of our algorithms by user experiments, and all the results indicated that my algorithms can provide compelling motion effects, even comparable to those manually designed by 4D effects designers.

A real-time perception-level audio-to-vibrotactile translation algorithm. Unlike previous signal-level conversion methods, our perception-level approach allows for designing intuitive and explicit conversion models with clear understandings of their perceptual consequences.

The effects of haptic disturbance were experimentally assessed. The results suggest high potentials for haptic disturbance to be a general strategy for expediting the motor learning process.

Vibrotactile score is a metaphor of the musical score for designing vibrotactile patterns. The conceptual design of vibrotactile score and clef are fully embodied in a graphical authoring tool named Vibrotactile Score Editor (VibScoreEditor).

An efficient modeling system of virtual pottery in which the user can deform a body of virtual clay with a haptic tool.
